Remembering Our Founder
Garry George "Jellybean" Johnson
The Minneapolis Sound Museum honors the extraordinary life and legacy of our founder, Garry George “Jellybean” Johnson—legendary producer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer, and one of the architects of the world-renowned Minneapolis Sound. Jellybean passed away at the age of 69, leaving behind a monumental musical and cultural impact that shaped generations.
Born in Chicago and raised in North Minneapolis from age 11, Jellybean’s musical journey began with his first drum kit and a deep love for the sounds he heard on the radio. His early friendships with Morris Day, Prince, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis would evolve into lifelong collaborations that helped define an era.
Jellybean was an original member of Flyte Tyme, later becoming a key force in the iconic group The Time, whose electrifying performances rivaled even Prince’s own shows during the legendary Triple Threat Tour. His talent extended across stage and screen, including his featured role in the 1984 cult classic Purple Rain. He lent his brilliance to major production work at Flyte Tyme Studios—creating hits for Janet Jackson, Mint Condition, New Edition, Alexander O’Neal, and more.
Beyond his artistry, Jellybean was deeply committed to the preservation of North Minneapolis culture. His vision led to the creation of the Minneapolis Sound Museum, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring the artists, community, and music that shaped the Minneapolis Sound. He championed local musicians, supported community arts, and rooted for everyone—always showing up, always giving back.
As we mourn this profound loss, we also celebrate the immeasurable love and legacy he leaves behind.
